The Radiation Physics Division at DTU Nutech is seeking candidates for a PhD position to develop new techniques for dosimetry in radiotherapy with protons. The Radiation Physics Division carries out research, innovation and research-based consultancy in the fields of dosimetry, luminescence physics, and neutronics, with applications within e.g. geological and archaeological dating, radiation therapy, radiation processing, radiation protection and nuclear emergency preparedness. The division presently consists of approx. 35 people including researchers, technicians and PhD students. Cancer patients all over the world are increasingly offered radiotherapy delivered by protons or heavy charged particles, and also Denmark is now building its own proton facility for such treatments: the Danish Center for Particle Therapy (DCPT) at Aarhus University Hospital. The more widespread use of particle therapy leads to higher demands for dosimetry tools that can help verify that treatments are delivered in a safe and sound manner. There are both needs for tools that can be used routinely in the clinic and there are needs for tools that can contribute to an improved understanding of research outcomes or to development of new treatment techniques. For protons, some of the key issues are handling of the range uncertainty and the ionization density effects in detectors as well as in biological material associated with high-LET radiations. Responsibilities and tasks The objective of this project is to further the potential use of fiber-coupled scintillator dosimetry for applications in particle therapy (mainly proton therapy) such as pre-treatment verification of complex treatment plans in anthropomorphic phantoms and independent audit methods or end-to-end testing. The main material of interest is organic plastic scintillating fibers. The key feature of this material is that all-plastic dosimeter probes can be designed as to cause minimal perturbation during measurements in plastic phantoms. The signal yield pr. unit of absorbed dose, however, changes with the ionization density (i.e. the microscopic nature of the dose delivery). This ionization quenching can be seen both as a significant feature and as a challenge, and the PhD project must first and foremost progress this aspect. The solutions could be improved modelling, improved signal processing, or improved use of supplementary information from other detectors or the dose-delivery system. Monte-Carlo modelling will be used extensively in order to understand the experimental outcomes, as a design tool and for uncertainty analysis. The PhD student will be enrolled at DTU Physics’ PhD-school, and the project will be jointly supervised by the Technical University of Denmark and Aarhus University. The main workplace for the PhD candidate will be DTU Nutech, but longer stays at Aarhus University and/or other institutions are foreseen. Qualifications The successful candidate is expected to have a master’s or equivalent degree in medical physics, engineering or experimental physics. Prior experience in medical physics, metrology, or computer modelling of radiation transport or heat flow would be an advantage. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
