PhD scholarship in IC design for Switched Capacitor Power Converters

The Electronics group at DTU Electrical Engineering seeks a qualified candidate for a vacant 3 year PhD position in the area of IC design.
 
Our group is responsible for analogue, power and mixed-mode IC design as well as power electronics research including advanced high efficiency high power density switching mode power supplies and very high frequency (VHF) power supplies. The goal of this PhD study is research into IC design of high efficiency and high dynamic switched capacitor power converters within the power range from 0.1 W and above. The applications could cover consumer and portable electronics such as adaptors for tablets and laptops, as well as LED drivers etc.   
 
Responsibilities and tasks 
For portable electronics such as laptops, there exists an ever-increasing demand for high power density and highly efficient power supplies. The primary focus of the project is to investigate and develop the best suitable switched capacitor power converter that will complement the performance of traditional inductor based switch-mode power supplies. The project will include circuit modelling & IC design, tape-outs, and building & testing of prototype circuits.
 
Any candidate who:

• has good grasps of analysis and synthesis of all kinds of switched capacitor power converter topologies;
• has good experience in using Cadence IC design (or equivalent EDA) tools;
• has general knowledge of PDKs
• has experience in using PCB layout software;
• is familiar with simulation tools such as LTspice, Matlab etc.;
• has good experience in making laboratory prototypes, debugging and testing integrated circuits and electronic circuits;
• is open-minded and team-work oriented to strive for common ambitious goals;
• is able to use communication skill in English at a good level;

will be considered as a candidate with favorable background.  The candidate with highly self-motivation and enthusiasm, and is able to work under a great tension would be preferred.
 
Qualifications
Candidates should hold a MSc in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the MSc in engineering.
 
Approval and Enrolment 
The PhD scholarship is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general PhD programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

The assessment of the applicants will be made by Postdoc Pere Llimos Muntal and Professor Michael A.E. Andersen.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
