Associate/Assistant Professor in Mechanics of Materials and Structures

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites applications for a position as assistant or associate Professor in Mechanics of Structures and Materials. DTU Mechanical Engineering is contributing to research, innovation and education within the following scientific areas: Structural and solid mechanics, fluid and hydrodynamics, applied thermodynamics, manufacturing technology, engineering design and product development, materials- and surface engineering. The staff consists of approximately 300 persons including a faculty of 55. The assistant/associate professor will be affiliated to the Section for Solid Mechanics (FAM), which is one out of six, sections in the department employing 62 persons including presently a faculty of 14. Responsibilities and tasks The structural mechanics research group is working on development and use of analytical and numerical methods to model structures with large deflections and strains and formulation and use of accurate, robust and efficient material models. Both areas typically depend on efficient numerical solution strategies, and therefore the new assistant/associate professor must have high-level computational qualifications. Candidates for the position should have a university level education in structural analysis or mechanics, and should have demonstrated research qualifications within at least one of the following engineering areas: •Mechanics of structures and structural elements •Nonlinear numerical analysis of structures •Advanced modeling of materials for structures Teaching activities constitute an essential part of the position, whether at the assistant or associate Professor level, and it is important that teaching reflects and relies on relevant research activities. In relation to the present position, this requires qualifications for teaching structural mechanics courses at both undergraduate and graduate level. Other relevant qualifications involve the ability to attract external research funding, to establish research collaboration with industry and international research institutions, and to guide and supervise younger researchers, such as PhD students and research assistants. The Structural Mechanics Group currently has four PhD students and carries out research in numerical methods in dynamics, damping and control of structures, cyclic plasticity in offshore structures, and development of finite elements for nonlinear structural behaviour and for wave propagation. These activities involve active collaborations with the wind turbine industry, the offshore industry, and the public authorities on light bridges. The selected candidate is expected to have or to develop a personal research profile, which is aligned with the general research in the Structural Mechanics Group. Qualifications Candidates for an •Assistant Professorship must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) •Associate Professorship must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an Assistant Professorship and should document didactic/pedagogic training.
