An assistant position related to experimental research on European eel breeding is available at the National Institute for Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) of the Technical University of Denmark. The position is affiliated with the Fish Biology Research Group of the Section for Marine Living Resources. Workplace is in Hirtshals at the EEL-HATCH facility.  

Responsibilities and tasks 

The job is part of the research and innovation project: Improve technology and scale-up production of offspring for European eel aquaculture (ITS-EEL).The project is performed in collaboration with the Danish industry and international collaborators. Here, the main goal is to breed eels and establish captive production of glass eels for sustainable aquaculture of this critically endangered species. In this context, the job includes assistance in broodstock management, assisted reproduction, sampling and data registration as well as in management of RAS systems, water quality assurance and general hatchery maintenance. The daily work involves interaction with an international, multi-disciplinary team and shifting working time.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a bachelor degree in biology or equivalent education with focus on aquatic science and technology. Experience within the following areas are required:

• Hatchery or aquaculture practice
• Fish culture and captive breeding
• Recirculating aquaculture systems and water quality management
• Data registration and handling
• Insight in environmental and animal laboratory science regulations

Due to the international composition of the team, proficiency in spoken and written English is needed.

 

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

 

The period of employment is two years.

Workplace
The workplace will be at DTU’s facilities in Hirtshals, Denmark, at the EEL-HATCH facility. The position is available from the beginning of 2019.
