The Research Group for Evolutionary Chemical Biology, Department of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen is offering a non-tenure associate professor position for 2.5 years with annual evaluation starting 1st August 2019 or as soon as possible here after. The group study advanced organic synthesis applied in development of molecular properties through evolutionary principles known from biology. We design by molecular modeling, synthesize and screen compound libraries towards a variety of biochemical targets by applying our own biocompatible polymer supports and state of the art combinatorial chemistry.

Job abstractJV_description
We seek an experienced candidate skilled in bioorganic chemistry, solid-phase synthesis and chemical modification of proteins which will support the present projects of exploring molecular recognition of structured peptides, peptide based iminium chemistry and developing GPCR agonists by OBOC- and SPOS-libraries. In addition it is expected that the candidate bring along own projects within chemical modifications of peptides and proteins. The associate professor will work in close collaboration with engineers, cell biologists and organic chemists. The job includes daily supervision of students working with solid phase synthesis and molecular design in a combinatorial manner. It also involves research within control of cellular behavior with peptide-mimics. Of particular importance is general experience with solid phase chemistry and screening on beads by the OBOC method. Knowledge of the area of solid phase synthesis of small molecules based on peptide and click chemistry is essential. The candidate should preferably demonstrate skills in the area of structural characterization of complex compounds by HR, NMR and MS and have experience in compound characterization from single beads. The candidate should be a broad scholar in the area of combinatorial science and screening technologies.

Duties include the applicant’s own research, development of the above described field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department.

The key duties for this position are:

• Maintain and manage research laboratory with focus on peptide synthesis
• Research on solid phase iminium chemistry, GPCR agonists, and chemistry of proteins
• Supervision and training of research staff within the research topics described above
• Writing results into articles in collaboration with project associated employees
• Teaching and dissemination at Department of Chemistry
• Assisting in recruitment processes and with other administrative work
• Help secure the infrastructure and equipment of the group
• Preparing grant applications with the group
• Facilitate research within the specified research project and across the group in general
• Establish a course in contemporary organic and solid-phase chemistry

Qualifications requirements
Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required. The candidate must have a PhD with organic and peptide synthesis at the core of the thesis. The candidate must be fluent in English. More than 10 prior publications within the described research topics are a prerequisite.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.

The key criteria for the assessment are:

• Demonstrated experience and qualifications with combinatorial chemistry and solid phase chemistry, mass spectrometry and click reactions of proteins
• Qualifications, ingenuity and creativity in organic synthesis
• Professional qualifications relevant to characterization of organic molecules at micro- and nano-mole level
• Relevant work experience with on-bead screening and cell based assays
• Ability to write manuscripts at the publication ready level
• Publication record relevant to the research topics presented above
• Patents and other documented innovation achievements relevant to the research topics
• Grants awarded based on a grant application authored by the candidate
• Teaching experience within organic and solid phase chemistry

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff. Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

Commencing salary is currently up to DKK 469.409 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 80.268). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
