A 2-year postdoc position on next generation optical cell analysis in 3D is available in the group of Prof. Niels B. Larsen at Dept. of Health Technology, Technical University of Denmark. The Larsen group combines optics and materials research for 3D microengineering and visualization of complex cell microenvironments. The position is part of a large collaborative project on providing faster and better patient diagnostics in emergency departments.

The main aim for the postdoc is to develop new optical methods for fast and accurate counting of specific human cell types in 3D analysis volumes. The sample format and the targeted analysis parameters are given by the final application in emergency departments, but the methods to obtain those sample parameters are open. Thus, you will be involved in a range of activities related to your specific project actitivies, including optical characterization of clinical samples to identify critical parameters and constraints, and collaboration with project colleagues on how to obtain the highest quality optical data, for example by specific staining of cells.

The acquired knowledge base will be used to design and implement an analysis system via optical modeling followed by system assembly, analysis procedures and associated software, and quality assessment using 3D cell phantoms and real clinical analysis samples provided by collaborators. Simple and rapid sample exchange will be essential for the final application, so in later project stages you will work on integrating a flow cell in the optical analysis system.

The position is available as soon as possible.

Responsibilities and tasks

Your key responsibility will be development of the optical analysis system and demonstration of its applicability to cell analysis in 3D. Specifically, this will include:

• Modeling of the optical analysis system.
• Construction of the optical analysis system.
• Integration of a microfluidic system for sample exchange.
• Characterization and optimization of the analysis accuracy on 3D phantoms and on clinical samples.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent. A PhD degree within physics, optics, microtechnology, microfluidics, or a similar degree will be preferred. It will an advantage to be experienced in building and controlling experimental setups.

It is essential that you like planning and executing your own experimental research, and that you enjoy learning new topics and skills across disciplines.

The postdoc project is part of a larger project supported by Innovation Fund Denmark. The partners are Radiometer, Technical University of Denmark (Department of Health Technology) and North Zealand Hospital. You will be working in close collaboration with colleagues from multiple disciplines and academic, industrial and hospital settings. Thus, you should like team work and be able to interact and collaborate with researchers across scientific fields.

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 2 years.
