The section Wind Turbine Loads and Control (LAC) at DTU Wind Energy is seeking a Postdoc within modelling and analysis of loads and dynamics of offshore wind turbines with focus on wave loading and dynamic response of bottom fixed and floating wind turbines.

The department creates value for society through integration of research with education, innovation and research-based consultancy within key fields central to the development and use of wind energy.

The section Wind Turbine Loads and Control focuses on modelling and analysis of loads and dynamics, aeroelastic stability, and control of wind turbines and wind farms. The research is implemented in software and in courses to the benefit of the wind energy community in general.

Your work includes development, implementation, application and validation of improved methods for modelling response of offshore wind turbine structures. An essential part of the work relates to the continuous development of the aero-hydro-elastic code HAWC2.

Furthermore, it is important to bridge between fundamental research on wave modeling, hydrodynamic loading and the dynamic aeroelastic interaction with the turbine in both bottom fixed and floating configuration and to enhance the collaboration with other groups in the department as well as industrial partners.

Responsibilities and tasks 
The successful candidate will have an important role in the further development of load simulations of offshore wind turbines. You will participate in national and international research and innovation projects and contribute to the management and generation of new projects. The research aims at future implementation in the industry and is sometimes performed in collaboration with the industry, as well as other Danish and foreign research institutions.

The candidate will conduct research into modelling and dynamic load analysis for offshore wind turbine substructures covering different aspects from linear/nonlinear wave modelling, hydrodynamic loads from waves, the associated structural response and the interaction with the full wind turbine under simultaneous wind-wave forcing using aero-hydro-elastic simulations.

Validation of load model is an important part of the work and consist on measurements from lab scale to full-scale experiments. Especially wave tank experiment of steep non-linear wave loading are an essential part of the work. Analysis of this data set involves both simple engineering methods as well as advanced numerical modelling. The emphasis of the research is to high degree on transferring physical knowledge to engineering models and implementing the validated engineering models into our developed computation codes. Here also statistical and reliability-based methods can be applied.

Besides, the candidate is expected to further expand the current activities related to soil-structure interaction including modelling of soil behavior and its influence on offshore structure response subjected to wind-wave forcing on both bottom fixed and floating structures.

The research will be conducted in the section of Wind Turbine Load and Control at DTU Wind Energy in collaboration with other postdocs and PhD students. Furthermore, the work involves a strong network and collaboration with national and international partners from universities and industry. The candidate is expected to publish in leading international journals and at leading conferences. The position further involves supervision of MSc/PhD students and assistance with the coordination of DTUs activities for relevant projects.

Qualifications 
The candidate should hold a PhD degree (or equivalent), preferably in the field of structural or mechanical engineering. The candidate must demonstrate profound knowledge in the fields of hydrodynamics and offshore wind energy.

The position requires technical qualifications within 

• Linear and nonlinear wave models and its associated wave kinematics
• Nonlinear wave hydrodynamics and wave loads with a focus on steep and breaking wave loads
• Physical insight in analysis of measured data
• Aero-elastic modelling of offshore wind turbine structures and structural response
• Statistical and reliability-based methods
• Mathematical modelling, numerical techniques and programming
• English communication

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The position is for 2 years and starts 15 December 2018.
