We seek an open-minded Postdoc with broad experience in screening using micro systems. High throughput screening is used in many fields including development of new enzymes, antibiotics, production strains etc. Similar procedures can be used for epitope mapping and a range of other biomedical applications. The methodology is always to test millions of different variants and pick the interesting ones. That procedure is costly and slow which limit screens. In this project we intend to investigate alternative miniaturised methods to screen for peptides with certain properties. 

The research is within droplet fluidics. In this case the droplets are immobilised on surfaces and the aim is to refine and test a selection system so that hits can be separated from the many uninteresting droplets. The research is cross disciplinary and involves screening of biological libraries, image analysis, optics and some microfabrication using standardised protocols.  

Responsibilities and tasks 
We seek a candidate that has a broad background in screening biological libraries using microsystems. The research will mainly be to develop HTS application for validating the droplet selection system. We aim to validate the system by screening for peptides that activates GFP or similar model system. Based on the your interests and network other types of screens are expected to be done. It is also possible to broaden your knowledge in fields outside your core competences such as programming and optics. 

You will be responsible for producing droplet arrays using existing protocols and procedures (see Kunding et al. 2018, Lab-on-a Chip journal), explore the limits and possibilities of a droplet selection system using model screening systems and to perform screens on real applications. Depending on the candidate profile, it is also possible to be involved in building that actual system and provide refinements in terms of automation.  

As the research has a very clear industry focus, the postdoc is expected to take part in develop relevant contacts in industries and university colleagues working with these industries. 

You will have the opportunity to guide Master students and to teach at practical courses. 

The project will mostly be done at DTU Nanotech in the groups of Martin Dufva and Niels B. Larsen.  However, within our network there is a large interest in new screening methods within food production, epitope mapping enzyme optimizations and cell biology. We encourage the postdoc to reach out to these communities. 

Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent. 

As the field is cross disciplinary we may accept candidates from many fields but preferably the candidate has a PhD in the field on bioengineering where the PhD project included usage or development of some micro-systems. Alternatively, the candidate may have a degree in Physics but has worked hands on with biological screening system. A deep understanding of the HTS application is needed which includes assay development, library preparation, and identification and characterisation of the selected biological compound. Image processing is desirable as is programming. 

It is important that you want to learn new technologies and want challenges to work with machine prototypes.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The position is a 2-year postdoc.
