PhD Scholarships in Computational Electrocatalysis

The Section for Atomic Scale Modelling and Materials at DTU Energy, Technical University of Denmark (DTU), invites applications for two PhD scholarships in the areas of computational studies of high temperature water electrolysis and N2 reduction. The research projects are aligned with focus areas for DTU Energy and are part of the Villum Center for the Science of Sustainable Fuels and Chemicals, which brings together researchers from the Technical University of Denmark, Stanford University, the University of Copenhagen, and the University of Southern Denmark, among others. Project description The successful candidates will use Density Functional Theory (DFT) to study water electrolysis or N2 reduction. The PhD project on high temperature water electrolysis focuses on the development of theoretical models describing activity for H2 formation on highly active ceria as a function of particle size, morphology and doping. The Ph.D. project on N2 reduction focuses on the prediction of novel catalysts for electrochemical reduction of N2 to NH3 using genetic algorithms and machine learning. The Ph.D. projects will be carried out in close collaboration with experimental groups in the Villum Center. The Ph.D. projects will be also linked to other computational projects working on electrocatalyst and materials modelling. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in physics, chemistry or materials science or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a master's degree in Engineering. A successful candidate: -has good communication skills in English, both written and spoken -is able to work independently and take responsibility for progress and quality of projects We favour candidates with experience in computational/theoretical physics, chemistry and related areas. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
