PhD scholarship in High Efficiency High Density Power Converters for Wireless Rapid Charging System

The Electronics group at DTU Electrical Engineering seeks a qualified candidate for a vacant 3-year PhD position in the area of power electronics.
 
Our group is globally recognized for the excellence of its research, innovation and scientific advice on advanced switch mode power supplies, very high frequency (VHF) power supplies and renewable energy power applications, as well as wireless charging system. Wireless power transfer systems are expanding their applications toward smart machines such as service robots, automated guided vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles, electric vehicles (EV), and many more. 
 
The goal of this PhD study is to investigate new circuit topologies, magnetics integration, and architectures for high efficiency and high density wireless rapid charging platform.  
 
Responsibilities and tasks 
To extend the operation time after single charge the urge for upsizing the battery capacity of such machines is growing. In order to reduce the charge time of such battery, i.e., the rapid charging, the on/off-board charging system needs to handle a higher power, resulting in costly, heavy and huge volume/size, which is inappropriate for practical commercialization. This project will provide 500 W to 3 kW fast charging solutions for multiple wireless charging applications such as drone and EV, targeting to a world-class high efficiency and high density (ultra-compact) system. 
 
The primary focus of the project is to investigate high density PFC, integrated EMI filter, WPT converter with implementation of CC-CV controllability (modification of compensation network, and optimization of Tx and Rx coils), as well as new architectures (elimination of electrolytic capacitor, and integration of resonant tank etc.) 
 
Any candidate who:

• has good grasps of analysis and synthesis of all kinds of power circuit topologies;
• has good grasps of analysis and synthesis of wireless compensation network;
• has good experience in magnetic optimization and integration;
• has good experience with analog control, as well as digital control such as using DSP and FPGA;
• is familiar with the characteristics and use of GaN devices within high frequency power electronics applications;
• has good experience in using PCB layout software;
• is familiar with simulation tools such as LTspice, ANSYS, PSIM etc.;
• has good experience in making laboratory prototypes, debugging and testing power electronic circuits;
• is able to use communication skill in English at a good level;

will be considered as a candidate with favorable background.  The candidate with high self-motivation and enthusiasm, and is able to work under a great tension would be preferred.
 
Qualifications
Candidates should hold a MSc in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the MSc in engineering.
 
Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
