A 3-year PhD fellowship is available at the Evolutionary Genomics Section, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark, with an expected start October 1st 2019, or shortly thereafter.



The fellowship is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 813383 as part of the Innovative Training Network "SeaChanges: Thresholds in Human Exploitation of Marine Vertebrates".



About SeaChanges



SeaChanges is an international doctoral training network spanning archaeology and marine biology, which offers 15 fully-funded, salaried PhD studentships (ESRs) across seven institutions in six countries. The network takes a long-term perspective on human exploitation of marine vertebrates, with projects covering species from herring to sperm whale, timescales from decades to millennia, and all of Europe's seas and beyond.



About your project



ESR15 - Exploitation and collapse of the Black Sea marine fauna

The archaeological record of the Black Sea region exhibits a great variety of economic and cultural practices dating back millennia. Marine resources appear to have played an important role in economy and diet, as documented by the recovery of small cetaceans and key fish species at archaeological sites from the Chalcolithic to Byzantine ages. The cetaceans inhabiting the Black Sea (harbour porpoise, common dolphin and bottlenose dolphin) are recognized as separate subspecies of special management and conservation concern, with IUCN listings as endangered or threatened. These have all been subject to periods of extensive hunting, and are now affected by fisheries bycatch and consequences of ctenophore invasion, undermining their trophic base. Along similar lines, overexploitation has decimated fish stocks, and led to the extermination of others. How did past marine resource use and environmental changes affect Black Sea cetaceans and key fish species? Did it reduce gene flow or adaptive genetic variation? Did cumulative pressures lead to trophic alterations, and how have this shaped the current marine ecosystem?



To address these questions, the project will review the Black Sea zooarchaeological record and modern ecological data of the Black Sea, apply genomic, proteomic and isotopic analyses to track changes in the genomes, demography and trophic interactions of Black Sea cetaceans, turbot, and anchovies in response to major shifts in environment and in human cultural and economic practices. This will serve to identify past and present pressures on marine species, understand their past and present cultural and economic role, and provide recommendations for their conservation and management. Genomic and proteomic analyses will be conducted at the principal host UCPH (Denmark), the zooarchaeological record will be reviewed via secondment at IZNASU (Ukraine) and dietary insights and predator-prey interactions will be addressed via secondment at CSIC (Spain).



The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student are:

Eligibility criteria

• The researcher must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of his/her host organization (Denmark) for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to his/her recruitment - unless as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention.
• The researcher must be Early Stage Researcher (ESR): at time of recruitment he/she must be in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent research experience)of his/her research careers and must not have been awarded a doctoral degree.

Marie Curie Training Networks offer a unique opportunity to get cutting-edge training in a multidisciplinary environment with a focus on academic and personal development of the PhD fellows. The supervisors in the network each provides specific competences, and as part of the network you develop your skills and carry out research both independently and as part of a network of 15 PhD fellows. The consortium ensures exchange of ideas through network-wide training events, summer schools and intersectoral secondments. As a PhD fellow in the SeaChanges network, you need to have good social skills, be innovative and goal-oriented and be willing to conduct the planned secondments.



Applicants should hold an MSc degree in population genetics, bioinformatics, archaeology, marine biology, ecology or equivalent with good results and good English skills. In the assessment of your qualifications emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience, including training in ancient DNA, genomics, proteomics, stable isotope analysis, zooarchaeology, statistical modelling, ecological modelling, and/or systematic literature review.



About the host and secondment institute



The University of Copenhagen (UCPH) is the largest and oldest university and research institution in Denmark, with more than 40,000 students, close to 3,000 doctoral students and over 9,000 employees. The Section for Evolutionary Genomics is composed of multiple research groups focusing on genomic, proteomic, morphological, distribution and other data, to investigate broad reaching questions of cross-disciplinary interest. This includes population- and phylogenomic techniques to both model and non-model organisms, as well as development of new tools based around the study of degraded biomolecules (e.g. ancient and environmental DNA), to ask questions in biodiversity, human-environment interactions, museomics, archaeological science and metagenomics.



The Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology (IZNASU) conducts research on the fauna of Ukraine, including evolution and taxonomy of animals; development of policies in conservation and management of wildlife and its monitoring with regard to human activities; and the zoological background for plant and animal protection. The Institute of Zoology is the leading Ukrainian centre in studies of biodiversity, contributing to the establishment of new protected areas and mapping the fauna of Ukraine. The Institute also houses collections.



The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is the largest public research institution in Spain and the third largest in Europe, hosting over 4000 doctoral and post-doctoral researchers across 138 institutes. The Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) undertakes research on oceanography, global change, fisheries biology and ecology, stock assessment, biodiversity, reproductive ecology, aquaculture, larval rearing, microbial ecology, marine pollution and conservation of marine endangered species.



Terms of employment

Employment will start: October 1st 2019, or shortly thereafter.

The terms of employment and salary are in accordance with Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff. Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State, and according to the rules and regulations laid down by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action European Training Network.

The PhD study must be completed in accordance with The Ministerial Order on the PhD programme (2013) and the University’s rules on achieving the degree. Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the agree­ment between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. Depending on seniority, the monthly salary begins around 27.135 DKK /approx. 3.633 EUR (April 2019-level) plus pension.
