Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering an Assistant Professor position in Plant Nutrition commencing 1 March 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for 24 months.


Description of the scientific environment
The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences strives to stimulate fundamental research and the synergy between basic and applied research in biology and environmental science. The focus is on plants, microorganisms, animals and the environment as a basis for sustainable production of food and other biological products. Research and teaching cover natural resources, agriculture, biotechnology and synthetic biology from the molecular level to the ecosystem scale.

The Plant Nutrition research group focuses on nutrient acquisition and utilization by higher plants and the functions of mineral elements in plant metabolism, plant productivity, plant-environment interactions and stress tolerance. Our overall goal is to increase nutrient use efficiency by contributing to development of new crop genotypes and fertilization strategies, the latter incorporating new tools for diagnosis of the nutritional status of plants and soils.

The successful candidate will be working in the Plant Nutrition research group, which currently is composed of 28 members. The project will be coordinated in close collaboration with Associate Professor Daniel Persson and Professor Søren Husted. Our research ambitions are high and we strive to publish our work in leading journals. The research environment is vibrant, friendly and international, consisting of scientists and students with diverse academic backgrounds such as plant science, molecular biology and analytical chemistry. The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences is located in central Copenhagen at the Frederiksberg Campus. The laboratories of the Plant Nutrition Research group will soon move to a new and attractive building at the newly established “Copenhagen Plant Science Center”. Copenhagen ranks among the most livable cities of the world and has several times been voted the number one capital in annual quality of life surveys.

Job abstractJV_description
In the project we will develop a new generation of foliar fertilizers based on multilayered nanoparticles (NP’s) with superior leaf absorption, release on-demand properties and low scorching tendency. We synthesize and modify the particles with properties to allow fast transport across the leaf surface, subsequent dissolution and assimilation in the plant tissue. We will study the uptake mechanisms at the cellular and the sub-cellular levels and analyse how the essential nutrients contained in the NP is utilized by basic metabolism. We use a range of state-of-the-art methodologies to trace the NP’s including LA-ICP-MS, PAM fluorescence and microscopy.

It is important that the applicant has strong fundamental competences within plant biology and that you have obtained substantial experience with the use of bioimaging techniques on plant tissue, not least strong competences within microscopy techniques (electron and confocal microscopy). Knowledge of basic inorganic chemistry and experience with inorganic synthesis is also a requirement.

If the successful candidate does not have didactic competences corresponding to the mandatory courses at SCIENCE, the candidate is expected to take the required didactic courses. When holding an assistant professor abstractJV_title, research based teaching is expected.

As the project is highly interdisciplinary it is important that the applicant has good communication skills at all levels and a high level in academic writing. You need to be able to document your interpersonal qualifications when applying – we value applicants that have experience with and talent for working in teams.

Formal requirements
Applicants should hold a PhD degree in plant science and show an excellent track record.

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently up to DKK 426.625 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 72.952). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
