Assistant Professor in Biophysical Characterization of Peptides/Proteins and Liposomal Drug Delivery Systems

An assistant professorship is available in the Colloids and Biological Interfaces (CBIO) group headed by Professor Thomas L. Andresen, DTU Health Technology, Technical University of Denmark, Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark. The assistant professorship is a permanent entry-level faculty position.

The CBIO group is an interdisciplinary group of approximately 50 people; including associate professors, assistant professors, postdocs, PhD students, and technical staff. The overall aim of the CBIO group is to develop novel drug delivery systems and - through careful characterization - gain detailed knowledge about the mechanisms that govern their interactions with biological systems.

The main focus of the position will be:

• Biophysical characterization of peptides and their interactions with lipid membranes for the purpose of identifying novel strategies for drug delivery of biopharmaceuticals across the gastrointestinal barrier.
• Formulation and characterization of liposomal drug delivery systems for the purpose of understanding their in vivo behaviour, for example, to cast light on the mechanisms governing their circulation longevity and transport across the blood-brain barrier.

Responsibilities and tasks

Specific responsibilities and tasks will include the following:

• Development of biophysical screening tools for analysing physical stability and lipid membrane interactions of peptide libraries to identify peptide properties governing their transport across the gastrointestinal barrier
• Formulation and characterization of antibody-functionalized liposomes to identify mechanisms governing their in vivo behaviour, specifically deciphering the impact of plasma proteins interacting with the liposomes during circulation in the bloodstream
• Supervision of Master and PhD students
• Direct involvement in educational activities within the department including teaching and developing courses as necessary
• Dissemination of research results through presentations at international conferences and symposia and publications in scientific journals

The candidate will operate within an interdisciplinary research environment with fellow colleagues in the CBIO group, the department, and external collaborators. The candidate is expected to strive for scientific excellence.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent). The candidate should have a strong scientific background in biophysics and, at the same time, demonstrate an interdisciplinary research profile. Specifically, the candidate should:

• Have experience with key biophysical and analytical techniques for the CBIO group, including fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, size-exclusion chromatography, reversed-phase HPLC, dynamic light scattering, phase analysis light scattering, SDS-PAGE, flow cytometry, and isothermal titration calorimetry
• Have experience with assays for evaluation of interactions between peptides/proteins and lipid membranes
• Have experience with assays for evaluation of physical stability of peptides/proteins
• Have experience with formulation and characterization of antibody-functionalized liposomes
• Have experience with isolation of liposomes from complex biological samples and subsequent analysis of liposome integrity and bound proteins
• Demonstrate broad scientific knowledge of drug delivery
• Demonstrate broad scientific knowledge of biological barriers
• Have experience with design and implementation of scientific projects and supervision of PhD students
• Demonstrate a strong potential and profile for research, documented through original publications in international scientific journals

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

An assistant professorship is a permanent entry-level faculty position. After a maximum of 4 years, an assistant professor can be promoted to an associate professor position after assessment.
