Postdoc position: Development of Micro-Nano-Bio Systems for online detection of foodborne pathogens

The National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark (DTU Food) conducts cross-disciplinary research on public health in relation to nutrition, food safety, environment and health. Activities include research, risk assessments, advisory to Danish, EU and international authorities and industry of food products throughout the food chain, from farm to table and the impact on human health. The institute monitors national food consumption patterns and food safety, and diagnostic services. The Laboratory of Applied Micro and Nanotechnology (LAMINATE) team at DTU Food invite applications for a Postdoc fellowship position to develop advanced micro-nano-bio systems suitable for online rapid detection of pathogens. Background The candidate will work for ISOAMKIT - a newly funded project from Grønt Udviklings- og Demonstrationsprogram (GUDP) - Green Development and Demonstration Programme. The project involves three industrial partners and two departments at DTU: DTU Food and DTU Nanotech. Food-borne diseases are a major public health threat worldwide. The globalized agro-food production contributes to this situation, as food moves across borders and continents in shorter and shorter time frames. Consequently, contaminated foods have often been consumed before authorities can react. To date bacterial cultures or molecular-based methods such as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) are the established methods for detection of foodborne pathogens. These methods are time consuming (usually take hours to days) and labor intensive for sample preparation and enrichment. The ISOAMKIT project aims to develop an isothermal amplification technology and a Lab-on-a-chip (LOC) system that consists of a multiple chamber polymeric chip with pre-stored reagents and as well as a handheld reading box with integrated heater and optical detector for online rapid detection of foodborne pathogens. Responsibilities and tasks The main task of the position is to cover the molecular biological aspects. The work includes: (1) development of new amplification technologies suitable for online rapid detection of pathogens; (2) development of new method for pre-storage of reagents on chip (3) implementation of the developed technologies on the LOC platform; (4) collaboration with other partners on system integration and evaluation using biological samples. Qualifications The successful applicant for the postdoc position should have a background (PhD degree or equivalent) in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology or related disciplines, with a strong background in molecular techniques that include: PCR, RT-PCR, Isothermal amplification and other amplification technologies, Immuno-based (applied antigen/antibodies/ aptamer)methods for rapid online detection of pathogens . Experiences with microarray, immuno-based, aptamer, lateral flow and lab-on-a-chip systems for online detection will be considered as an advantage. The candidate should demonstrate evidence of self-driven and independent prior research productivity, excellent collaboration and communication skills, an interest in working in an interdisciplinary research environment, and a strong motivation to succeed within a competitive research field.
