The TopOpt-group (http://www.topopt.dtu.dk) within the Section of Solid Mechanics, Department of Mechanical Engineering is world leading within development and applications of topology optimization methods for mechanical and multiphysics systems. A special effort, facilitated by the Villum Investigator Grant InnoTop (Interactive, Non-Linear, High-Resolution Topology Optimization headed by Villum Investigator, professor Ole Sigmund) is devoted to speed improvements based on multiscale modelling and optimization.

Compared to brute force, high-resolution topology optimization schemes, multiscale approaches have the potential to save immense computational time and at the same time provide highly efficient and regular structures, amenable to manufacturing using e.g. additive manufacturing methods, or to further processing and refinement using shape and sizing optimization.  

Responsibilities and tasks 
The Postdoc shall perform and lead research within multiscale approaches for large-scale topology optimization problems. A multitude of related activities within the InnoTop project are on-going and it will be a responsibility of the Postdoc to tie these activities together and combine them into one efficient and user-friendly process chain, including basic modelling, optimization, interactivity and post-processing using computer graphics approaches.

The preferred candidate shall have background / experience in the following areas: 

• Multiscale modelling and finite element analysis
• Advanced topology optimization
• Multiscale / homogenization-based topology optimization
• Geometry processing / computer graphics
• Parallel computing
• Be self-motivated, out-going and willing and able to collaborate with colleagues and project partners with widely different backgrounds

The InnoTop project involves partners with widely different backgrounds, including solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, multiphysics and computer graphics and is based on collaborations with several different DTU departments, most notably DTU Compute as well as an extensive network of international collaborators.

Qualifications 
The candidate must have a PhD degree or equivalent in mechanical or aerospace engineering, computer science or a similar degree involving extensive numerical modelling, structural optimization and programming activities.

Apart from a convincing research portfolio, the candidate must document and motivate experience and interest in teaching and advising duties as well as public outreach activities.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is two years with start 1 January 2019 or soonest possible after this date. 

The Postdoc position is associated with Department of Mechanical Engineering at Lyngby Campus but may involve shorter stays at external institutions.
