PhD scholarship in X-ray phase contrast nano-tomography of 3rd generation solar cells

At DTU Energy, we have considerable experience with development of 3rd generation solar cells, specifically as regards scale-up to devices that may be manufactured at high speed in large volume. To become truly competitive as an important part of the energy supply in the future society, relying entirely on sustainable energy, we must acquire a better understanding of the fundamental processes of charge generation and transport in 3rd generation solar cells. At DTU Energy, we are leading experts in characterization of the crucial nanostructures governing solar cell performance, but in order to model and manage charge generation and transport in solar cells, we need to understand not only the static structures, but also the dynamic properties of the system. See also below for a further description of the department and the research section. Responsibilities and tasks In this project, the PhD candidate will quantify the nanostructure of 3rd generation solar cells, from absorber layer to electrodes and interfaces and will work on improving algorithms for 3D reconstruction from ultra-high resolution X-ray projections, typically from ptychographic tomography (ptychography is a form of phase contrast imaging, exploiting coherent X-ray illumination). 3D resolution depends on X-ray beam and sample positioning stability, and not least, on the algorithms for aligning projections and reconstructing the phase tomogram. The standard way of reconstructing tomograms from 2D ptychography projections is the well-established filtered back projection, reconstructing the tomogram slice by slice, but much more advanced algorithms for 3D reconstructions have been developed and will be applied. Methods of reconstructing the phase distribution directly from the 3D array of diffraction data should also be developed by the candidate, who should have a strong background in mathematics and numerical methods. As the direct outcome of the project, we aim for: 1.Demonstration of coherent diffractive tomography at the NanoMAX beam line. 2.3D data that allow us to quantify domain sizes, connectivity and interfacial structures in the complete device, from front to back electrode. 3.Imaging of a complete kesterite solar cell in 3D, with 5 nm resolution, resolving individual nanoparticles and grain boundaries 4.Imaging of a complete polymer solar cell with 5 nm resolution in 3D, resolving contrast between donor and acceptor phase. We have a close collaboration with the NanoMAX team at the MAXIV and we expect that substantial work will take place at the NanoMAX beam line. The project constitutes a central part of the theoretical framework behind SEEWHI, a 5 year project, funded by the European Research Council and aimed at a breakthrough in high-efficiency, large scale 3rd generation solar cells. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in Physics, Chemistry or a similar relevant degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
