PhD Scholarship in Tailoring the Material Properties of Pyrolysed Carbon Microelectrodes

Applications are invited for the fully funded 3-year PhD scholarship in Tailoring the material properties of pyrolysed carbon microelectrodes. The PhD scholarship is part of the VKR Young investigator grant ‘Intelligent 3D cell scaffolds for environmental applications’ funded by the Villum Foundation. In this context, the PhD student will work in close collaboration with another PhD candidate and a postdoctoral researcher. The aim of the overall project is to develop a new generation of electrically conductive 3D cell scaffolds. The main contribution of the PhD scholarship is to investigate and optimize material properties of pyrolysed carbon electrodes. In the pyrolysis process, conductive carbon structures are obtained through “burning” of polymer templates at high temperatures in inert atmosphere. The focus of the PhD scholarship is to develop an understanding of the pyrolysis process on a molecular level and to build a library of carbon-based electrode materials. The pyrolysis of various polymers will be investigated to gain in-depth understanding of the influence of the template material on the properties of the resulting carbon electrode. This includes characterization of structural and mechanical properties, and the electrical and electrochemical performance. The performance of the carbon microelectrodes will be evaluated in bioelectrochemical applications. Research environment The PhD student will be supervised by Senior Researcher Stephan Sylvest Keller at the Department of Micro- and Nanotechnology (DTU Nanotech) at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The PhD will be associated with the Nanoprobes group of Prof. Anja Boisen. Microfabrication will be carried out in the cleanroom facilities of DTU Danchip and the laboratories of DTU Nanotech. For characterization state-of-the art tools such as XPS, AFM, Raman and FT-IR are available. Imaging will partially be performed in the electron microscopy facilities of DTU CEN. Qualifications The applicant should have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in chemistry, material science, engineering, electronics or physics. The ideal candidate should have experience in polymer chemistry and technology. Additional experience with micro- and nanofabrication, microelectronics or optics is an advantage. The PhD project will be very interdisciplinary and the candidate is expected to have the interest to explore new applications of carbon-based materials. A high grade average is decisive to be considered for the scholarship. Approval and Enrolment The PhD scholarship is subject to academic approval and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
