PhD scholarship in Numerical Modeling of Micro Plasto Hydrostatic and Hydrodynamic Lubrication Mechanisms

DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Section for Manufacturing Engineering has a vacant 3-year PhD position in numerical modeling of micro plasto hydrostatic and hydrodynamic lubrication mechanisms. The position is to be filled March 1st, 2019 or soon after that.

Tribology is important for process feasibility, tool wear and component quality in metal forming. Some of the lubrication mechanisms can be enhanced by tailoring tool and workpiece surfaces or by optimizing process parameters. Numerical simulation of these mechanisms represents an important step towards further understanding of the fundamentals as well as a valuable method to assist the optimization of metal forming processes from a lubrication point of view. The specific area of the PhD project is simulation of micro plasto hydrostatic and hydrodynamic lubrication mechanisms.

Responsibilities and tasks

The PhD project will include numerical modeling of complex lubrication mechanisms with potential of improving and optimizing metal forming operations. The numerical modeling will involve fluid mechanics, solid mechanics and coupling of the two domains to handle their interactions. Therefore:

• Are you interested in numerical modeling of a complex fluid-solid problem, perhaps you are our new PhD student.

During the three years of employment:

• You will be responsible for coding a framework capable of handling metal plasticity, fluid flow and their mutual interaction.
• You will contribute to an important topic in metal forming, both from an academic and an industrial point of view.
• You will be engaged in a general challenge in numerical modeling; namely the fluid-solid interaction.
• You will be publishing in scientific journals and present your work at international conferences.
• You will be involved in academic work such as being teaching assistant.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
