The Department of Wind Energy in the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Wind Energy) is seeking a PhD for the Integration and Planning Section (INP).

DTU Wind Energy is a mission driven university department with a vision to be the preferred university partner for the global wind energy sector. The department creates value for society through integration of research with education, innovation and research-based consultancy within key fields central to the development and use of wind energy.

You will be part of the international team carrying out research in Integration and Planning Section where the working language is English.

Our research is function oriented in the sense that we direct the research towards issues that are relevant for industrial development and applications, and we work in projects with system integration, control concepts for wind turbines, wind power plants, electrical components, grid connection and large-scale wind energy penetration.

DTU has a strategic collaboration agreement with SINTEF and NTNU (Norwegian Technical University) and has established the Nordic Offshore Wind Research and Innovation Centre (NOWRIC). The NOWRIC Center is a solid platform for both academic and industrial collaboration. DTU Wind Energy supports the Center with this PhD position.

Offshore wind power development today is mostly done in large wind farms, located further from the shore. Depending on the distance, the transmission to shore is done using Direct Current (DC) technology. However, the collection system - the electrical infrastructure connecting the individual wind turbines - is based on Alternating Current (AC) technology. This is not optimal, as it involves another conversion stage - AC to DC - with the added components and additional losses. To overcome this, DC technology can be used for the offshore wind farm collection system. Several concepts have been proposed in the literature, however there is a gap in the analysis of the detailed implications of those concepts on the wind turbine control. Furthermore, there is great need of a unified tool that allows performing a techno-economic analysis of the different concepts.

The present PhD project will be associated to the Nordic Offshore Wind Research and Innovation Center, and will take advantage of collaboration with researchers at both DTU, NTNU and SINTEF.

Responsibilities and tasks


The proposed PhD study will investigate concepts for MVDC collection grid in large offshore wind farms. The focus will be on large wind turbines, i.e. larger than 10MW. The main objective is to investigate, analyze, develop and implement MVDC topologies that will result in an overall lower cost of wind power. The analysis will cover the entire chain from wind turbines to offshore HVDC converter: wind turbine DC converter, MVDC cables, and DC/DC converters for MV to HV DC.

Detailed project plan will be developed with the supervisors and will include laboratory experiments. As a minimum, the PhD will include the following responsibilities and tasks:

• State of the art literature review
• Development and implementation of DC component models
• Development of tool for techno-economic comparison of DC collection system concepts
• Lab scale experimental testing at NTNU/SINTEF facilities

Qualifications

Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in Electrical Engineering / Power Electronics / Power Engineering.

The successful candidate is required to have:

• Documented background in converter modelling and control
• Documented background in at least one power engineering simulation tool, e.g. PSCAD, PowerFactory, Simscape Power Systems
• Knowledge on wind turbine / wind power plant technology
• Ability to work in a project team and take responsibility for own research goals
• Fluency in communicating and reporting in English
• Prior experience with Real time digital simulations and Hardware in the Loop Testing is appreciated.

The successful candidate must also fulfill the requirements for admission to a doctoral program at both DTU and NTNU.

The scholarship for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. Salary and appointment terms


The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

The workplace will be DTU Wind Energy, Risø Campus at Roskilde. During the 3 years of employment, a stay of one year is required with the co-supervisor at NTNU. It is expected that the candidate will obtain a double doctorate degree from both NTNU and DTU jointly, according to the framework agreement of 4 January 2017.
