PhD scholarship in Load Environment Modelling and Forecasting

The project will be carried out at the Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Centre (Centre for Oil and Gas – DTU), Technical University of Denmark (DTU). As part of the National Strategy on Oil and Gas, the research centre is an ambitious, targeted effort to enable increased recovery of oil and gas from the Danish North Sea. As a part of this strategy, the Centre wants to undertake research to increase the structural integrity of existing offshore structures and at the same time to reduce maintenance cost. The Centre is therefore carrying out investigations on: Big data techniques such as Bayesian Probabilistic Nets in conjunction with physical and phenomenological models to establish joint dependent environmental load models for waves, wind and current events. Responsibilities and tasks The models shall facilitate the utilization of available experimental results from wave tanks but also accommodate for on-site measurements and hind cast data. The developed models shall account consistently for aleatory and epistemic uncertainty with some emphasis on model uncertainties which might be reduced through model refinements - in collaboration with PhD related projects. The developed models shall be applied for establishing environmental load models which for defined return period events are appropriate for ULS design criteria for offshore facilities but also for fatigue loading assessments. Moreover, for the purpose of supporting decision making with respect to operations shutdown and evacuation of personnel the developed models shall be coupled with real time environmental loading observations and weather prediction models to forecast potentially critical environmental load events in probabilistic terms. Finally, in interaction with other research partners the developed models shall facilitate that the value of additional measurements and model improvements can be assessed. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
