Department of Civil Engineering, Technical University of Denmark, DTU Byg, offers a PhD scholarship within hygrothermal building physics. The scholarship is a part of an extensive Horizon 2020 project RIBuild - Robust Internal Thermal Insulation of Historic Buildings (2015-2019). Upgrading the existing building stock is a rapidly increasing activity in Denmark, Europe and around the world and RIBuild will develop effective, comprehensive decision guidelines to optimise the design and implementation of internal thermal insulation in historic buildings across the EU http://ribuild.eu/. Read more about ReBuild on http://www.rebuild.byg.dtu.dk/english A significant number of buildings in Europe and in Denmark are built before 1950, and are often valued for their cultural, architectural and historic significance. Therefore these buildings cannot just be replaced by new highly efficient buildings. Furthermore, the external insulation of the existing walls is usually impossible. The remaining measure is the internal insulation. The complexity of historic buildings and many potential risks with internal insulation – like risk for mould growth and reduced durability of the existing wall – call for new interdisciplinary knowledge that can be used to assess the feasibility of installing internal thermal insulation. This includes knowledge in the historic building materials and their characteristics, the typical climatic conditions, characteristics of insulation materials and methods for measuring, monitoring and modelling the performance. Responsibilities and tasks The objective of this PhD project is to obtain a thorough knowledge level on combined heat and moisture transfer processes and related material characterisation in historic building materials when they are combined with new materials in a refurbished construction. Specific focus should be given to materials and cases eligible for a deep internal thermal insulation renovation of historic buildings with heavy external walls and for determination of critical thresholds for failure. The planned research includes a literature study of existing internal insulation measures for historic buildings and a study of the state-of-art knowledge on heat and moisture transfer in porous building materials in building envelopes. The research will encompass deep understanding of moisture transfer processes and related material characteristics of porous building materials. Special focus shall be given to the dimension of historic building materials and their characterisation for modelling and design purposes, including determination of threshold values for failure, material characterisation models and testing methodology. Laboratory and field work is expected including measurements of hygrothermal material parameters of both old building materials and materials suitable for internal insulation. Field work will include monitoring of the hygrothermal performance of internal insulation on the project’s test sites in Denmark and includes also a research stay in one of the partner universities. Correlation of determined material parameters and material characterisation models and the monitored performance of different internal insulation measures (laboratory and real buildings) shall be tested with numerical simulations. The candidates must therefore document advanced knowledge in heat and mass transfer theory and experience with experimental methods for hygrothermal material characterization and/or in-situ monitoring.
