The Acoustic Technology group at the Department of Electrical Engineering seeks qualified and talented candidates for a vacant PhD position in highly absorbing metamaterials for broadband applications.

The Acoustic Technology group and the Centre for Acoustic-Mechanical Micro Systems conduct research in architectural acoustics, vibration, transducers, sound field analysis, measurement techniques, acoustical-mechanical interaction, numerical methods and optimization. As a part of a new research project we will initiate projects on acoustic metamaterials and their application in acoustic components and systems, looking into several different applications such as loudspeaker and building elements.

Acoustic metamaterials have emerged as an academic discipline within the last decade. The definition may be broadly interpreted as materials that display extraordinary properties not found in natural materials with respect to sound and vibration characteristics. They owe their properties to periodic internal structures in the sub-wavelength scale.

Recently it has been demonstrated that exotic properties of acoustic metamaterials may be compromised if the acoustic losses from viscous and thermal boundary layers are included in the model. These losses have been shown to play an important role even if the dimensions of the geometrical details become larger. In the present PhD project, we aim to exploit this newly discovered effect to create materials that are highly absorbing.

Responsibilities and tasks

This project will investigate the possibilities of using metamaterials for increasing the sound absorption. The goal of the project will be to extend the bandwidth, absorption and feasibility of absorbing metamaterials and make them usable in practical applications. It is envisioned that during the project the following elements will need to be addressed:

• Sensitivity analysis and optimization of a Boundary Element (BE) model with losses. The existing modelling tool, based on an in-house BE code with viscous and thermal losses included, has been shown to accurately model the loss effects in metamaterials. The simulation tool will be extended by using advanced shape optimization techniques.
• Broadband absorbers. In order to create materials that have practical applications as absorbers they should work for a broad range of frequencies. The second part of the PhD project will extend the analysis/optimization model to include theses effects. A time-domain model will be considered as a possibility for including frequency range optimization which calls for a new formulation of the existing BE model with losses.
• Application extensions. Application of the developed material in ducts and room absorbers requires extension of the model in different ways. For duct absorbers the inclusion of fluid flow will be essential and included in the model. For room absorbers an extension to cover a broad range of angles of incidence will be incorporated in the model.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a relevant MSc in physics, acoustics, mechanical or civil engineering, and who can document experience in at least one, but preferable more, of the following areas:

• Numerical modelling of acoustic systems
• Optimization techniques
• Room and duct acoustics
• Viscous and thermal losses in acoustics

Qualifications

Candidates should hold a MSc in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the MSc in engineering.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

As the PhD project is a part of a major research collaboration with the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), South Korea, the PhD project will include an external research stay at KAIST.
