PhD scholarship in CFD for Internal Combustion Engines

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (DTU Mekanik) at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has an open 3-year PhD position in the area of Computational Fluid Dynamics for internal combustion engines. The research project involves detailed investigations of combustion and emission characteristics using heavy fuel oil, marine diesel oil, and liquefied natural gas oil in large two-stroke marine diesel engines. The model development will be performed in Open FOAM and in STAR-CCM+ and focus on the modelling of turbulent chemistry interaction in full engine models.

The PhD position is part of a larger project funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark and includes in addition a postdoctoral position at DTU Mekanik and another PhD and postdoctoral fellowship at the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at DTU. Key project partners are MAN Energy Solutions, Copenhagen Denmark, and the University of Lund, Sweden.

Responsibilities and tasks
Contribute to all aspects of the developing of the turbulent chemistry interaction models and full engine simulations using Large Eddy Simulations. Also the candidate is expected to work closely with Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at DTU to define the criteria in developing skeletal mechanisms for different fuels and evaluate their performance in CFD calculations. The position will involve co-supervision of Master's students.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. An MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent with knowledge in combustion modeling is preferred.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience with STAR-CCM+, OpenFOAM, C++ and Chemkin and/or Cantera.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
