A 3-year PhD fellowship is available at the Evolutionary Genomics Section, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark, with an expected start October 1st 2019, or shortly thereafter.

The fellowship is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 813383 Innovative Training Network "SeaChanges: Thresholds in Human Exploitation of Marine Vertebrates".

About SeaChanges

SeaChanges is an international doctoral training network spanning archaeology and marine biology, which offers 15 fully-funded, salaried PhD studentships (ESRs) across seven institutions in six countries. The network takes a long-term perspective on human exploitation of marine vertebrates, with projects covering species from herring to sperm whale, timescales from decades to millennia, and all of Europe's seas and beyond.

About your project

ESR6 - Sedimentary fish archives and diadromous taxa

Diadromous fish, i.e. those which migrate between rivers and seas during their spawning cycle such as salmon, sea trout and sturgeon, have been an important food resource in most regions of Europe for longer than their marine counterparts. Subject not only to fishing pressure but also to pollution and habitat modification in rivers and lakes, they are especially vulnerable to human activity. River-spawning anadromous fish, in particular, are often subject to intensive fishing during their spawning runs, which may also be disrupted by construction of dams and weirs. The presence of various migratory species in Europe’s rivers is known to have contracted significantly over the past century, but the true time-depth of this decline remains to be established, as does the relative contribution of fishing pressure vs. damming and other modifications to river systems.

The project will address this issue using ancient DNA from sediment cores (sedimentary aDNA; sedaDNA). While historical records may reveal fluctuating prices, and archaeological remains provide evidence of consumed taxa, neither is direct evidence for the presence or relative abundance of migratory fish in particular freshwater systems. Continuously deposited lake sediments, by contrast, have recently been shown to contain genetic remains of past aquatic communities, each layer representing a temporal environmental archive in which we can identify and quantify the presence of migrating fish populations. Using sedaDNA analysis, combined with radiometric dating, the ESR will construct time-series of diadromous fish presence from cores taken in selected waters within the North Sea and Danube basins, and compare these with corresponding archaeological records to assess the complementarity of these sources. The ESR includes ancient DNA analyses conducted at the principal host UCPH (Denmark), secondments conducted at York (UK), and collaboration with NGO partners to explore potential of ancient sturgeon data for contemporary management and awareness-raising.

The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student are:

Eligibility criteria

• The researcher must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of his/her host organization (Denmark) for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to his/her recruitment - unless as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention.
• The researcher must be Early Stage Researcher (ESR): at time of recruitment he/she must be in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent research experience)of his/her research careers and must not have been awarded a doctoral degree.

Marie Curie Training Networks offer a unique opportunity to get cutting-edge training in a multidisciplinary environment with a focus on academic and personal development of the PhD fellows. The supervisors in the network each provides specific competences, and as part of the network you develop your skills and carry out research both independently and as part of a network of 15 PhD fellows. The consortium ensures exchange of ideas through network-wide training events, summer schools and intersectoral secondments. As a PhD fellow in the SeaChanges network, you need to have good social skills, be innovative and goal-oriented and be willing to conduct the planned secondments.

Applicants should hold an MSc degree in population genetics, bioinformatics, archaeology, aquatic ecology or equivalent with good results and good English skills. In the assessment of your qualifications emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience, including training in ancient or environmental DNA, genomics, radiocarbon dating, stable isotope analysis, zooarchaeology, and/or fish and aquatic ecology.

About the host and secondment institute

The University of Copenhagen (UCPH) is the largest and oldest university and research institution in Denmark, with more than 40,000 students, close to 3,000 doctoral students and over 9,000 employees. The Section for Evolutionary Genomics is composed of multiple research groups focusing on genomic, proteomic, morphological, distribution and other data, to investigate broad reaching questions of cross-disciplinary interest. This includes population- and phylogenomic techniques to both model and non-model organisms, as well as development of new tools based around the study of degraded biomolecules (e.g. ancient and environmental DNA), to ask questions in biodiversity, human-environment interactions, museomics, archaeological science and metagenomics.

BioArCh at the University of York is a collaborative research facility formed by the Archaeology, Biology and Chemistry Departments with a unique concentration of expertise in human palaeoecology and environmental archaeology, with internationally recognised strengths in proteins, lipids, DNA and stable isotopes; human, other mammal, fish and bird bones; molluscs, soils, and microscopic remains of plants and animals. Research covers prehistoric and historic themes, forging stronger and more diverse links between laboratory and field.

Terms of employment

Employment will start: October 1st 2019, or shortly thereafter.

The terms of employment and salary are in accordance with Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff. Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State, and according to the rules and regulations laid down by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action European Training Network.

The PhD study must be completed in accordance with The Ministerial Order on the PhD programme (2013) and the University’s rules on achieving the degree. Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the agree­ment between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. Depending on seniority, the monthly salary begins around 27.135 DKK /approx. 3.633 EUR (April 2019-level) plus pension.
