Center for Permafrost (CENPERM) at the University of Copenhagen is recruiting one PhD–student to work in the field of subsurface gas dynamics including gas production, transport and exchange with the atmosphere. The position is available from 15 January 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
CENPERM, a Center of Excellence co-funded by the Danish National Research Foundation and University of Copenhagen, is an interdisciplinary research center with a scientific focus on “climate – vegetation –soil – microorganism – permafrost” along transects across the major climate zones of Greenland (see http://www.CENPERM.ku.dk).

The center consists of about 25 permanent staff members from the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management and Department of Biology. Some 15 PhD students and postdocs have been or are currently affiliated with the center.
The successful candidate will work in an international environment with scientists and students working on related aspects of cryo-microbiology, biogeochemistry, ecology and ecosystem modelling.

Project Outline
This PhD project aims to link observed surface gas exchange and subsurface gas production, transport and consumption. Based on field observations of subsurface gas concentrations and laboratory incubations, processes will be simulated in a model and validated against observed gas fluxes including CO2, CH4 and BVOC. Fieldwork at Disko, Greenland, will include measurements during one full year, not the least winter fluxes, assessing the importance of frozen barriers for gas transport, and simulated warm winter events. Incubations will include assessment of gas production and consumption (e.g., CH4 oxidation as a function of partial pressure of O2 and CH4 and soil characteristics as temperature (Q10), water content and pH). Laboratory investigations on soil type- and depth-specific soil diffusion coefficients will include measurements as a function of water content and freezing.

We expect that detailed process-based models can help to assess the importance of small-scale soil processes and properties such as anaerobiosis, subsurface diffusion and lateral transport, and can help to understand the role of warming events and freeze-thaw dynamics for biogeochemical processes. These detailed models can subsequently be applied to determine the importance of these small-scale processes at landscape scale, and will help to explain spatial and temporal variations, specifically assessing the role and dynamics of “hotspots” for greenhouse gas exchange in the Arctic landscape.

Formal requirements
Applicants should hold an MSc degree or equivalent in geo- or bioscience (e.g. geography, biology, or environmental sciences), or have obtained this by 15 January 2019. Fluency in spoken and written English is a requirement. The candidate is expected to be able to be involved in long-term field work in the Arctic – also during winter time.

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 312.879 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 43.219). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.

The successful candidate will be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD
School of Science. The Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management will be the main working place.
