Ice-core impurity lab manager at Physics of Ice, Climate and Earth

Physics of Ice, Climate and Earth (PICE) at the Niels Bohr Institute (Faculty of Science, the University of Copenhagen) is looking for a lab manager. The position is for a 6-month period starting August 1st, 2019.

About us
The section for the Physics of Ice, Climate and Earth at the Niels Bohr Institute studies the elements of the Earth system – the atmosphere, oceans, ice sheets and glaciers, sea ice, and the solid Earth itself – and the interactions between them.

The lab manager will be employed as part of the project IceFlow, which is a Villum Investigator Project (2017-2023) with the overall aim to improve knowledge of the flow and deformation of ice with special emphasis on the North East Greenland Ice Stream (NEGIS). The project spans ice core studies, borehole observations, and an extensive surface program including radar and drone measurements.

Tasks
The job includes the following technical tasks:

• operate a Continuous Flow Analysis system for the analysis of ice cores, in co-ordination with gas and isotope labs,
• create and optimise new measurement techniques for the CFA system,
• operate an Ion Chromatograph for the analysis of impurities in ice core samples,
• conduct processing and analysis of ice core data, including blank corrections, calibrations and alignment of co-registered data, and ensure such data is saved on secure media and available to PICE staff,
• ensure quality control measures are applied to ice core data,
• manage ice core samples stored in the PICE archive as well as subsamples produced by ice core measurement techniques,
• ensure ice core data is securely saved and made publicly available through publication and online databases.
  

The job includes the following organization/coordination tasks:

• ensure the CFA and IC systems are operating within budget constraints,
• ensure the timely purchasing and storage of CFA and IC consumables,
• co-ordinate and manage a CFA analysis campaign, involving international partners and manage international ice shipments,
• co-ordinate and conduct international transfers of ice-core samples and measurement instrumentation,
• co-organise an international PhD school on the topic of ice-core analysis techniques

We expect you to have

• A scientific background within experimental physics, preferably at the level of a PhD
• Experience within Earth or Environmental sciences
• Experience with the above mentioned technical tasks
• Good communication and coordination skills
• A collaborative mindset

Terms of salary and employment
The employment and salary is made in accordance with the Circular on the Collective Agreement concerning academics in the state sector concluded between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
