We invite applications for the position as director of Nordic Institute of Asian Studies at Department of Political Science, Faculty of the Social Sciences, University of Copenhagen. The position is available from 1 April 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Applications are sought from eminent candidates, on the level of associate professor, professor with special responsibility or full professor, who will be able to manage and develop the Nordic Institute for Asian Studies and to participate in and develop Asia related activities at the Faculty of Social Sciences and at the University of Copenhagen

A successful applicant must possess significant managerial and strategic competences as well as the relevant academic competences.

Managerial and strategic competences
-Experience with strategy development and implementation of strategies in a university context
-Experience with managing networks, information resources and policy-work, preferably in a university context
-Proven teambuilding and team-development competences
-Proven ability to motivate and manage the performance of researchers and professionals at the institute
-Proven communication and networking skills
-Proven ability and experience in attracting external funding

Academic Competences
-In-depth knowledge of regional studies in Asia in general as well a particular Asian country or region
-Knowledge of the Nordic region and its interrelationship with Asia
-A proven record of academic and policy impact

These generic academic competences should be demonstrated on different levels depending on whether the applicant applies for an associate professorship, a professorship with special responsibilities or a full professorship.

Applicants must submit a brief (no more than 3 pages) vision statement on how they will develop the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies. The vision statement should include the top three strategic priorities for NIAS in the next 5 years, the institute’s integration into the University’s research environment on Asia as well as the University’s Asian Dynamics Initiative and a abstractJV_description of how these goals should be realized.

The directorship is a five-year position, but a successful candidate will be employed on a permanent basis as a member of the Faculty of the Department of Political Science.

Associate Professor Qualifications
Essential Qualifications
•Appointment as Associate Professor requires research and teaching qualifications at the level that can be achieved by satisfactorily completing a period of employment at the level of assistant professor or equivalent.
•A proven record of outstanding research, as evidenced by an international reputation in Asian studies or other fields relevant to the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies as well as a track record of publishing in top journals and/or a highly influential publication record with leading book publishers.
•A commitment to share insights and knowledge in the public debate, to take societal responsibility, and a track record of making a conceptual, instrumental, as well as capacity building impact in Denmark as well as in an international context.
•A significant track record of excellence in teaching in Asia related topics or one or more of the main areas covered by the Department.
•A clear, well-developed and viable strategy for future outstanding research that will result in further world-leading publications as well as a commitment to innovate teaching.
•Track record of engagement in the wider academic community and the commitment to contribute to a vibrant work environment.
•The ability and willingness to attract external research funding.
•An experience with or commitment to teaching which gives students real-life competences as well as the ability to critically reflect on the world and its problems

Professor/Professor with special responsibilities Qualifications
Essential Qualifications
•A proven record of outstanding research, as evidenced by an recognized international reputation in Asian studies or other fields relevant to the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies and demonstrated by a considerable number of existing high-quality publications, which constitute a significant contribution to the field. Publications should be published on a continuous basis in top-ranked journals and/or a highly influential publication record with leading book publishers.
•A commitment to share insights and knowledge in the public debate, to take societal responsibility, and a track record of making a conceptual, instrumental, as well as capacity building impact in Denmark as well as in an international context.
•A clear, well-developed strategy for sustained high quality research that results in world-leading publications and which develops the field.
• A significant track record of excellence in teaching in Asia related topics or one or more of the main areas covered by the Department.
•A track record of engagement in the wider academic community and the commitment to contribute to a vibrant work environment.
•Proven ability to provide leadership of research groups as well as ability to operate in leadership roles at the Departmental, Faculty and University levels.
•The ability and willingness to attract external funding on a larger scale and to lead research projects.•Experience as an editor of journals, membership of the board of professional associations or other academic public goods.

Job abstractJV_description
The director is responsible to the NIAS board and the Head of the Political Science Department. The director is responsible for the daily management of the institute and its employees. The director is responsible for liaising with the institute’s stakeholders and partners in the Nordic region as well as with the Nordic Council of Ministers. The director also represent the institute in Nordic and international media. The director must set the strategic direction and supervise the continuous development of the Institute’s products. Furthermore, the director must in a proactive manner participate in and develop the Asian Dynamic Initiative and other Asian related activities at the University of Copenhagen as part of strengthening the future development of NIAS.

About the Institute
Celebrating its 50 anniversary in 2018, the Nordic Institute for Asian Studies is a university research and information infrastructure centre focusing on the societal, political, economic and cultural transformations in modern Asia in their historical context. The NIAS library provides important scholarly infrastructure for study of Asian issues in the Nordic countries. NIAS Press publishes a number of scholarly publications each year. The Institute also constitutes the organisational framework for the FUDAN Institute at the University of Copenhagen and the institute is closely integrated in the Asian academic community in the University of Copenhagen. As an integrated part of the Department of Political Science the Institute takes part in teaching and research activities at the Department and across UCPH departments. About the Asia Dynamic Initiative
Asian Dynamics Initiative (ADI) is a cross-faculty Asia focus at the University of Copenhagen. ADI aims at coordinating existing research and teaching on Asia as well as creating a common platform for new, interdisciplinary Asian studies and research. The overall purpose of the initiative is to strengthen and develop research and teaching on Asia. About the Department
The Nordic Institute of Asian Studies is closely integrated into the Department of Political Science and the director is expected to be actively engaged in the management of the Department as well as the research and teaching activities of the Department. The Department of Political Science has 2,000 students in its BA and MA programmes in Political Science as well as the MA in Social Sciences and MA in Security Risk Management programmes. The Department consists of 55 faculty, 14 post.docs and 38 PhD students, and there are 21 administrative staff. The Department is one of the top-ranked European political science departments. Conditions of employment
Salary and conditions of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The annual salary is currently DKK 461,868 (EUR 62,000 app.) at the associate professor level and DKK 605.528 (EUR 81,300 app.) at the professor level. In addition to the salary paid directly to you, the University will also pay a monthly contribution to your pension fund corresponding to 17.1 % of your salary. Please note that a position as professor with special responsibilities is offered as a 5-year professorship with special responsibilities, with the possibility of extension for up to 3 years. On expiry of the professorship period, the appointee is offered employment and remuneration as Associate Professor.

Especially about the Director supplement: A special duty supplement will be available for the position and will be paid for a period of 5 years. The special duty supplement will be in the range of 60,000 DKK p.a. depending on qualifications. The period as director and the special duty supplement can be prolonged if the funding for Nordic Institute for Asian Studies is available after 5 years.
