The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences (PLEN), Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen invites applications for a time unlimited position as Associate Professor within the area of "Crop Science”. The position is an integrated part of the section Crop Sciences. The Department wishes to fill the position by 1 September 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Root growth and function is fundamental for crop production and plays an important role in stress responses. With expected future changes in climate, knowledge on the importance of roots for resource uptake under varying conditions such as drought or waterlogging becomes essential. The successful candidate is expected to conduct research focusing on the interaction between plant genotype, management and environment as the basis of crop growth and production. Research emphasis will be on root stress physiology, studying the activity of roots, uptake of resources under abiotic stress combined with biotic factors. The section Crop Sciences aims to strengthen research within a Danish production of protein crops with special emphasis on improving yields and yield stability. In particular, it is the aim to strengthen research in stress responses to biotic and abiotic factors affecting the yield stability. Research within crop rotation, intercropping and resource acquisition should be main topics.

Qualifications in several of the following areas are required:

• Profound experience with planning and conducting field and semi-field experiments with crops, crop rotations and intercropping, including data analyses.
• Capability to improve the basic understanding of the importance of roots for resource acquisition.
• Ability to combine basic scientific discoveries with applied research, in order to improve agricultural sustainability.
• Extensive knowledge of root growth, distribution and activity in soil.
• Experience with tracer techniques to study resource uptake by crops.
• Management of research projects and successful track-record of grant applications.

Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required.

The candidate is expected to take active part in teaching of basic and advanced crop science strengthening research based teaching in the field of agriculture, crop production and stress physiology. The associate professor should contribute to the continuous development of courses on BSc and MSc level as well as teaching and planning PhD courses. The candidate must take responsibility as course coordinator when appropriate and engage in the future development and strengthening of the education anchored at PLEN. As PLEN BSc courses are taught in Danish the candidate should be committed to teach in Danish within a few years.

Duties include the applicant’s own research, development of the field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.

The section Crop Sciences focuses on basic and applied sciences related to crop production. The section emphasizes on improving land management for sustainable food production in a changing climate. The unique facilities for root studies in an agronomic relevant setup, DeepRootLab, Root towers and RadiMax, enable researchers at Crop Science to conduct cutting-edge research addressing roots, their growth, physiology and function. Collaboration with Center of Advanced Bioimaging (CAB), Denmark and MAX IV in Sweden offers high performance imaging, world-class electron spectroscopy and microscopy of roots.

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

Commencing salary is currently up to DKK 469.409 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 80.268)

Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
