Department of Nutrition, Exercise, and Sports, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in Molecular Physiology commencing 15 December 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment.
The molecular physiology section focuses on how regulation of energy metabolism influences health and prevents development of disease. We focus on the interaction between physical activity, exercise training and nutrition. It is well known that regular physical activity and nutrition is important for maintaining health yet the underlying molecular mechanisms are not known but likely include regulation of energy metabolism particularly in muscle as well as cross-talk between muscle and other organs. We do research from "molecule to man" including techniques of molecular biology, transgenic organisms and human beings.

Project abstractJV_description
This PhD project will elucidate the molecular mechanisms that drive insulin sensitivity in muscle. Methods used will be widespread, ranging from transgenic rodents to human studies, combined with state-of-the-art biochemistry, mass spectrometry, and molecular biology.
Specifically this Phd project will i) elucidate the effect of exercise/ contraction and AMPK agonists on muscle insulin sensitivity and ii) the role herein for the regulatory AMPK gamma 3 subunit

Job abstractJV_description
The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:

• To manage and carry through your research project
• Attend PhD courses
• Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
• Teach and disseminate your research
• To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad
• Work for the department

Formal requirements
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in Human Physiology with good results and good English skills. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience. Experience with animal experimentation is a requirement. The applicant needs to hold a FELASA B certificate.

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 312.879 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 43.219). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
